One could argue that it’s easy to be asleep in America, that one could sleep walk through America’s cities and never see homelessness, that you can watch a sports channel all day and never know that children are dying in places of war. And by sleep do I mean ignore, absolutely. Willful ignorance is a form of “sleep” a form of denial to the realities that exist and have existed. That is why when so many people see a reality that has been happening right in front of their face, the first thing the say is, “I didn’t know.”

Now there is a fundamental difference between not wanting to know, not caring to know, and not believing or accepting so you don’t have to know. You may not want to believe that children got shot down in a school yard, you may even believe that it’s a hoax, because someone said it was. However if you let someone think or speak for you, then you are “sleeping.” To be awake in America or anywhere for that matter is to think critically, and to see things for how they are not how we want them to be.

America on some level has always lied, to herself, her people and the world. When the lies help support the idealism of a majority of people the lie is not only essentially ignored but perpetuated, in oder to maintain a status-quo. I know I’ve used this example often but only in the comparison of the two could John Wayne be called a hero and Muhammad Ali not. Still at a certain time in our History and maybe still, there are those in America who have shrines to John Wayne as if he killed so called Indians, as if he fought in a war, as if he could have knocked out Muhammad Ali in the ring. Of course none of that was true but people believed it possible, and those people were sleeping in America. So the question becomes or is who benefits from people “sleeping” in America. Is it corporate America, Political America, the Chamber of Commerce America, all of the above and more. Mostly Capitalist America, now does this mean that Capitalism in America requires people to be asleep in order to thrive, possibly. There are still some successful businesses that originated in America that require their consumers to be asleep. Look at the cigarette industry, the oil and gas industry, or just look at individuals like Bernie Madoff. All of these entities exploited/exploit the sleeping of their consumers, the belief that what they are providing is just, sound, American. There is nothing more American than exploiting people and then at the same time telling them that they shouldn’t see have the bullshit is made, to keep the successful, “successful.” The question one may ask is why are people “sleeping” on America, her potentialities, and themselves.

When Martin Luther King Jr. made his “I Have a Dream,” speech he was telling America that she was sleeping, because part of her population wasn’t allowed to dream the same way if at all, as the majority in America had done and had the freedom to do. The question becomes why wasn’t that population able to dream like everyone else was in America. Well that population was enslaved, that population was exploited, and that population was denied. Now that population in Florida is being told by Ron DeSantis, not only does your reality not matter but fuck your dream as well.

I have read some terrible books in my life and I have had some terrible dreams and as much as I would like to throw “The Protocols of Zion,” into my fire pit; I can’t. I don’t know how I got the book or when but I know it’s bullshit. Still I can’t and won’t burn it, because I believe that that ignorance and vile pervasiveness should be challenged at all and any cost and the best way to do that is by knowing what people are saying, writing, reading. So no I do not believe that a book should be banned no matter how ignorant it is, nor should a dream. I believe that knowledge should be out there for us to consume on our own and not to be regurgitated to us as if we were/are baby chicks, being fed by a vultures of knowledge pretending to be eagles of freedom.

So if you feel uncomfortable in America, if you want to sleep walk through this all and pretend that when you walk outside that the only reality that exists in the world is the one that makes you feel comfortable, then you are more of a princess than any LGBTQ person has been or was ever. Trying to sweep history under the proverbial rug does not mean that it will go away or disappear, nor does it mean that you will feel comfortable. Truth and knowledge have a way of revealing themselves and freedom is never known Ron DeSantis, in the denial of knowledge but in the acceptance that is with in. The acceptance of the Truth.
